Cookie University Tuesday Night, Dec. 1

Cookie University will be held for all Troops Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at Plymouth Church, off Edgell Road. Leaders MUST contact Helena so the Troop's bag will be ready. Holiday Sing-a-long & Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 4th

The Town will hold its annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 4th at 6 p.m. The Girl Scouts have been invited to perform a holiday sing-along in anticipation of Santa's arrival. Before the Service Unit of Framingham Girl Scouts will accept the invitation, the service unit is trying to gauge how many Troops and Scouts plan to participate.

After the Scout Sing-along, the Girl Scouts likely will sing a song with Santa and then Santa will light the Framingham Christmas Tree. Afterwards, Scouts and families are invited to go inside Town Hall for hot cocoa and treats; and listen to the all-elementary school band concert.

Aquarium Overnight for Juniors on Jan 8-9

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is hosting a special Overnight for Junior Scouts at the New England Aquarium on Jan 8-9 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Juliette Scouts in grades 4 & 5 may also register.
What better way to learn about strange and fascinating animals and their underwater world! Junior Scouts will spend the evening participating in hands-on science experiments and art activities, then enjoy a snack and bed down to sleep in an exhibit.
The following morning, after continental breakfast, they'll discover the rest of the Aquarium before it opens to the public. They can hear a Giant Ocean Tank Talk or have a guided tide pool experience. Participants are invited to spend the rest of the day exploring the Aquarium.
Each Scout will receive an overnight patch for FREE admission into the Aquarium any day during the calendar year on the patch (wear the patch!)
Troop volunteers are required to attend with their troop, at just the required Safety-Wise ratios of 2 adults for the first 5 girls and 1 adult per additional 5 girls. Juliette and individual scouts must register with an adult.
Registration deadline is when the event fills up or on or before Dec. 8.
Registration fee is $54 per Scout and $54 for Troop leaders and adult volunteers.

Cadette "Kerry O. Key" Program in Acton on Jan. 8

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is offering a "Kerry O. Key" program for Cadette Scouts on Jan 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Acton Congregational Church at 12 Concord Road. This program is also open to Juliette Scouts in grades 6-7-8.
Program info: If you LOVE American Idol and you love to be challenged this is the program for YOU! Choose a song from the book, create a performance and sing your face off during this team oriented karaoke challenge!
Registration is $10.50 per Scout. Leaders and adult chaperones are free.

Astronomy Overnight in Worcester on Jan 29-30 for Brownie Scouts

Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts, in conjunction with Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester, is offering a special Astronomy Overnight program for Brownies on Friday, Jan 29 from 6:30 p.m. to Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8:45 a.m. Juliette Scouts in grades 2 & 3 may also register with an adult or parent.
The winter months are the perfect time to explore the night skies. Earn your Space Explorer Try-It while participating in fun astronomy activities, then take a night hike on the grounds of the sanctuary.
This program is set up for small troops looking for an overnight experience with an outdoor component.
Note: If your group is larger than 15, contact Broad Meadow Brook to set up your own date (other topics and Try-Its are available).
Trained overnight leader and first aider required with each group.
Try-Its can be purchased separately at the Council store.

Council Offers Babysitting Course in Waltham on Saturday, Dec. 5

Babysitting is an awesome way for Scouts to learn the responsibilities of caring for others and earn extra cash. This excellent training event includes instruction on First Aid, safety precautions, child development, emergency procedures, age-appropriate activities, etc. Cadette, Senior & Ambassador Scouts will receive a certiļ¬cate and a patch upon completion. Bring a doll or teddy bear for hands on practice and a bag lunch.
Juliette Scouts in grades 6-12 may also register.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council is offering this special program at camp Cedar Hill in Waltham from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Registration fee is $21 per Scout. Leaders and adult chaperones are free. Individual Scouts must come with a chaperone.

Party Like A Princess Event in Tewksbury on Saturday, Dec. 5

Council Offering Jungle Safari program in Framingham for Brownies

Jungle Safari: Put on your safari hats and get ready to explore the world! Can you handle going to Africa? What about Costa Rica? Go from country to country, greating the wildlife and the people. Enjoy music and crafts from around the world!
This special Brownie Scout program, offered by Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council, will be held Friday night, Dec. 11 from 6 to 8:30 at First Parish Church, 24 Vernon Street in Framingham.
Juliette (and individual) Scouts in grades 2 & 3 may also register. Troops and individual Scout may register. Safety-wise rules apply to Troop registrations. A guardian or parent must attend with an individual or Juliette Scout. Adults are expected to help.
Registration is $10 per Brownie. Adults are free.
Registration deadline is Nov. 20 or when the event fills up.

Snowshoe Program Offered for Junior or Older Scout Level in Waltham

Explore camp in the winter on snowshoes!
Learn how to make your way through the snow while exploring natural wonders of the outdoors. Finish up at the lodge with some hot cocoa. This program, offered by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council, is dependent on snow conditions.
Groups of 6-24 Scouts allowed. Scouts must be Junior level or older.
Program is offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays 4-5:30 from Dec. 1 through March 18th. The cost is $75 for up to 12 and $120 for 13-24 girls.
Registration deadline is 4 weeks prior to program. Blackout dates include: Dec, 12-31 and Feb. 16-18. The program will beheld at camp Cedar Hill in Waltham.
Due to the nature of this program's flexible dates, the Outdoor Adventure Series can not be registered for via the Council Web site. Please submit the Outdoor Adventure Series Request Form via mail or fax. For additional information or with questions, please contact a program director at the Council.

Mad Science Program at Northeastern University CANCELLED

The "Mad Scientists" program, which was to be held at Northeastern University, this Saturday, Nov. 21, has been cancelled. The event, sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council was to have been an interactive science workshop, where Brownies could perform experiments and watch demonstrations that make science come to life.

Wheelock Family Theatre Workshop for Juniors on Dec. 5

Wheelock Family Theatre Workshop: Each workshop includes 3 classes, and all Junior Scouts will participate in each workshop. Junior Scouts will learn twice as many drama skills as required for theatre badges!

Brownie Swim Safety Program on January 9th in Worcester

Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts Council is offering a Swim Safety program on Saturday, Jan. 9 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the YWCA in Worcester for Brownie Scouts. Juliette Scouts in grades 2 & 3 also may register.
Program info: Looking for a fun way to introduce your Girl Scout Brownies to Water Safety? Brownies will work in small groups to review and learn water safety and swimming skills. The afternoon begins with one half-hour on "dry land," with water safety activities, games and role-playing. Then, the Brownies move to the pool and rotate through 4 stations where they'll develop and practice swimming, water safety, rescue, and synchronized swimming skills. Free swim time is also included in the program.

The program is limited to a maximum of 40 Brownies. Registration is ongoing until all slots are filled. Registration is $5 per Scout and does NOT included a participation patch. Adults and leaders are free, and do NOT need to wear swimsuits or go into the pool.

Rockin' Overnight at Central Rock Gym in Worcester on Dec. 12-13

Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts Council is hosting a Rockin' overnight at the Central Rock Gym in Worcester for Brownies & Junior Scouts or Juliette Scouts in grades 2-3-4-5. The event starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 and ends at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13.
Event info: You'll have a rockin' good time at this fantastic rock-wall gym on an overnight full of memorable climbing and other fun adventures! There is 14,000 square feet of climbing area for climbers of all levels and plenty of room for your sleeping bags on the padded floors. As the girls learn to climb, there will be climbing races, a super-fun rope swing, bouldering, and more. Pizza dinner and a light breakfast is included.
Trained overnight leader and first aider required with each group.

Registration cost is $50 per Scout and $13 per leader and adult chaperone.

NEW Volunteer Recognitions Announced by Council

EASTERN MA COUNCIL NEWS: With the Girl Scout year underway, volunteers are hard at work providing quality programs.
Take a moment to help Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and the Service Unit recognize volunteers who go above and beyond the job description by nominating volunteers for the adult recognition awards.
At the Council level volunteers can earn the Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, Thanks Badge, and Thanks Badge II, while Service Units can be awarded the President’s Award. Service Units can award the Outstanding Volunteer and Outstanding Leader awards.

This year GSEM has created 3 new recognitions:
* Green and Growing - for outstanding new volunteers;
* Sustained Service Award - for volunteers who continue to provide the same excellent service year after year
* Make New Friends Certificate – a recognition to give thanks to community organizations that support local Girl Scouts.

More information will be available on the Eastern Massachusetts Council Web site soon.
In the meantime the nomination forms are available in the Resources and Forms library on the website under Awards, Volunteer Recognition Nomination and Volunteer Recognition Endorsement.

Green and Growing Pin Design Contest
The Green & Growing Pin will be awarded to adults who have been troop volunteers for less than 2 years and have already exemplified the qualities of an outstanding troop volunteer.
The contest is open to all registered adults in Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.
The design can include up to three colors and will be reproduced on a 1” enamel pin.
Entries should be received electronically and in full color.
Entries are due by Tuesday December 1, 2009 to klambert-serna@girlscoutseasternmass.org in order to be considered by our Adult Recognitions Committee.

Nutcracker Performances by Dance Prism between Nov. 29 & Dec. 20

Dance Prism offers Girl Scouts and their leaders an opportunity to experience a special afternoon of ballet and fun at performances of The Nutcracker.
Families of Scouts are also welcome to attend.
Daisies and Brownies are treated to a pre-performance demonstration in the auditorium where they learn details about the costuming, makeup and scenery of the production.
Juniors and older Scouts may participate in a Scout-oriented backstage tour focusing on the technical parts of a theatrical production such as lighting, scenery, and props (limited availability).
All Scouts will receive a Dance Prism Nutcracker Patch designed especially for them.
Last year, more than 1,750 Scouts of all ages and their families attended last season’s production!
Scout groups (minimum 5 Scouts and one adult) are given generous ticket discounts and best seating available at time of registration.
All seats are reserved; registration is accepted until the performance sells out.

Brownie Nutcracker Ballet Workshop FULL

Boston Ballet School will present a lively, interactive overview of the dance world and the history of dance, training, choreography, and equipment.
Each workshop will feature a behind-the-scenes look at Boston Ballet productions, including real costumes and footwear from the costume shop, and photos and videos to bring ballet to life. Lecturers will intersperse factual information with entertaining anecdotes from their own performing careers.
The girls will learn a few steps to music so they can experience the fun of dancing together. Workshops DO NOT include tickets to performances.
Boston Ballet offers Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council group discounts of up to 50%.

Gold Award Orientation in Stow on Dec. 8th

Gold Award Orientation: Get Smart. Girls and adults are encouraged to attend orientation before beginning to work on the Gold Award. At this workshop, on Dec. 8th Scouts will learn about the process and get tips to move forward. Girl Scouts USA's new guidelines will be discussed and all questions will be answered.
The workshop is for Senior & Ambassador level Scouts.

Still Space at the Girl Scout Adult Volunteer Conference Saturday in Concord

Sign up now for the Childs Play the Multicultural Way (Adult Learning Conference) it's this Saturday, November 7th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Concord Carlisle High School.
Registration is ongoing through Friday afternoon at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council's web site.

Roller Skating Night!

About 100 Girl Scouts participated in the Framingham Service Unit's Roller Skating Night at Roller Kingdom in Hudson on Sunday. The event was to celebrate Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low's birthday.

Girl Scout Day at Old Sturbridge Village Saturday, Nov. 7

Unfortunately, all the Brownie workshops are sold out, but discounted admission tickets are still available for Girl Scouts (and their families) for Girl Scout Day at Old Sturbridge Village on Saturday, Nov. 7. Admission is just $7 per person.

The organization's spring event attracted more than 1,800 Girl Scouts. Saturdays, event is sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts and the Boy Scouts.

Create-A-Cook Program for Juniors in Norton on Dec. 11

Create-a-Cook: Who said you can’t play with your food? Experiment with kitchen tools and see what a serving size should look like. Then turn the heat up in the kitchen and Create-a-Cook. This Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council event will be held Friday night, Nov. 11 from 4 to 7 in the Norton area at a location TBN. Registration fee is $13 per Junior or Juliette (grades 4-5-6) Scout. Adult chaperones and leaders are free.
